How to efficiently combine the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method with the Business Model Canvas (BMC).
The business model Canvas is a visual and strategic management tool to develop the requirements for a new business model or to map those of existing ones. In essence, it is a kind of guide for established companies and start-ups to adapt their structures, processes and systems to their strategy. Using the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method, participants build models from LEGO® bricks that incorporate aspects of reality through the use of metaphors.
By combining LEGO SERIOUS PLAY with BMC, participants can not only design and describe a business model, but also create a 3D version of it.
The procedure follows the BMC logic. However, each element of the 9 fields is built instead of verbalized and written: First we will develop a new product using the LEGO SERIOUS PLAY methodology in the workshop. We will then fill in all nine fields of the BMC by so-called “Shared Model Building”. Building together leads to a broadening of understanding and other insights.
Advantage: Testing and optimization of BMC in real time
Another major advantage of the combination of LEGO SERIOUS PLAY and the business model Canvas is used in the further development: The BMC can be further tested and thus optimized by connecting it to a built SWOT analysis. After extracting strengths and assessing opportunities, participants will build models that can overcome statements such as weaknesses and threats. Participants will use various LEGO connectors and connectors to assess the potential impact. Thus, the business model is adjusted accordingly to eliminate or reduce the risks.
